288

In the fall of 1964, residents of second Goodhue adopted the name 288 for their intramural sports teams. Following in the footsteps of the Vigilantes of first Goodhue, the name was used to identify the residents as a group as well as the teams.

Some of the residents of second Goodhue in the fall of '64 had previously lived on first Goodhue and others had aspired to become Vigilantes. Because of the vagaries of Room Draw they had been "exiled" to the second floor of Goodhue. They promoted a spirited rivalry with their downstairs neighbors, in intramural sports and in reputation (the boys of 288 wanted to be known as jocks as good as the Vigilantes without the "Animal House" qualities associated with the first Goodhue group).

288 appeared on team/floor shirts as commonly as Vigilante shirts. The intent of the name was to confuse and provoke this discussion:

"What does 288 mean?"

"I can't tell you, it's just two gross."
