The astronomy major is a program of study that was offered until 1971, when it was abolished due to budget concerns.[1] At various times the major was offered by the Astronomy Department, the Mathematics and Astronomy Department, and Physics and Astronomy Department.

A handful of astronomy courses are still offered, and are considered complementary to the physics major, which is widely considered sufficient for entrance to graduate schools of astronomy.
