This page is the official style guide for editing on CarlWiki. It is a collaborative effort on topics such as punctuation and spelling. Any fairly obvious policies should simply be added. Any suggestions or disagreements should be posted in this article's talk page.
For a broader view of what should and shouldn't be on CarlWiki in the first place, see CarlWiki:Policy and CarlWiki:Meta-policy.

Article names
Class years
- Class years should be included in the names of articles on all current students and all alumni who graduated in 1920 or later. For example, the novelist Pamela Dean graduated in 1975, so her article is entitled Pamela Dean '75. Thorstein Veblen, on the other hand, graduated in 1880, so his article is simply entitled Thorstein Veblen. (This policy is currently in dispute. See this article's discussion page.)
Course names
- Course articles should only include the name of the course in its own name, and not the course number. For example, Newtonian Mechanics. The course number (Physics 113 and PHYS 113) should be used to create redirects. The exception is introductory language courses or other courses that share the same name. For example, Japanese 101 and Japanese 102 do not have distinct names other than their numbers.
- In the case of courses with names that include a colon, such as "Introduction to Physics: Newtonian Mechanics", the full name should be a redirect to the most relevant shorter name (PHYS 113: Newtonian Mechanics). In this case, the first part of the name refers to the Introduction to Physics sequence, which has a separate course sequence page. Often, the longer name is listed in the course catalog, while the shorter name is used in the online registration system.
Room numbers
- Room numbers should be indicated with the building name (or appropriate building appreviation) followed by a space and the room number. In the case of rooms on basement floors, it is usually best to prefix the number with a 0. Example: CMC 013
Article text
Bolding the article name
- The first time an article name appears in the text of an article, normally in the first sentence, it should be bolded by placing three apostrophes on each side of it ('''). However, this is the only time that it should be bolded.
Categories
Academic terms
- All terms, such as Winter Term 2004, should be placed in Category:History and Category:Terms (in that order). They should be sorted in the format "YYYY, #" where # is 1 for Winter, 2 for Spring, 3 for Fall. This places the terms in their appropriate order when listed by calendar year. For example, Winter Term 2004 has the tags
[[Category:History|2004, 1]]and[[Category:Terms|2004, 1]].
