"Carl" and "Carletonian" are terms sometimes used to refer to Carleton students, with "Carl" being more common. This can create some confusion, since at any given time there are around five students named Carl at Carleton.

These terms are even used officially sometimes. For instance, the Office of Admissions calls its guide for college sophomores Carl 411.
