CarlWiki:Administrator needed
From CarlWiki
An important message from Michael Moore '06 as a follow-up to Trevor Burnham's post below:
As I'm hosting the site, and it is undergoing huge amounts of spam and vandalism, I have temporarily taken over the site's administration until a new administrator can be found. I see Trevor says on his page that he has appointed Steve Merry '10 as the new administrator, but I have also see that comment deleted elsewhere. As I'm not sure _who_ is really in charge of the site right now, I have taken temporary control.
I have closed down the site from unregistered edits to protect its integrity, and am trying my best to remove all the spam. If you are interested in administering the site (or you are Steve Merry '10), please email me right away. I hate to restrict unregistered edits, but the spam is frankly too much to deal with at the moment.
Please note - the site is still open for edits, you just need to create a user in order to make them. If you wish for your edits to be anonymous, please stand by for the editing restriction to be lifted upon the appointment of a new administrator.
Thanks,
Michael
An important message from Trevor Burnham '08:
Lately, I've been too busy to give CarlWiki the attention it deserves. Even as it reaches its three-year anniversary, with a wonderful 500+ articles, expansion has slowed to a crawl. Despite numerous useful features (it's still the best place to go to remind yourself of when your 2a is), only a small segment of Carleton's student population is even aware of its existence. For this, I apologize. I put a lot of work into CarlWiki early on, but lately, academics, Quiz Bowl and other projects have taken priority.
So: I am looking for a replacement. Do you have what it takes to take CarlWiki to the next level? Useful skills would include:
- Familiarity with basic website maintenance, e.g. FTP
- Some web coding skills, such as HTML and CSS; PHP would also be a plus
- Experience with MediaWiki—if you're a renowned Wikipedia editor, this is your chance to shine
- The ability to program in Python (currently taught in Carleton's introductory CS courses) would also be neat, since it would allow you to create bots
But the most important qualification is an interest in all things Carleton and a vision for CarlWiki's future as a resource for students. Some of my own suggestions:
- Make CarlWiki a viewbook on steroids, with photo-rich articles on Carleton's and, perhaps, courses
- Encourage to use CarlWiki as an easy way of making their own pages
- Get new students in the habit of using CarlWiki to look up bits of Carleton esoteria they don't understand (e.g. our)
If you're interested in taking the reins, please pop me an e-mail. Current students are preferred. I'll continue to be available to consult, and I'll keep paying for the CarlWiki.org domain. (Hosting is generously provided by Michael Moore '06.)
Best wishes,
Trevor
