The copyright policy of CarlWiki is generally that contributions are copyrighted by their respective contributors.

Rules for readers

Because materials on CarlWiki are copyrighted (unless otherwise stated), they may not be used elsewhere without permission, except under fair use statutes. This is the same as on a normal collaborative website, such as LiveJournal. This is different from "open-content" sites such as Wikipedia. Although CarlWiki is modeled after Wikipedia, it does not take the same generous approach to copyright. People who give their permission to have their photos of the campus used on CarlWiki, for example, might object to those photos being used elsewhere.

Rules for contributors

Nearly everything in this world is copyrighted. Unless it's your own material, you probably shouldn't upload it to CarlWiki. Here are some specifics:

  • Do not upload a picture from the Carleton website, or any other website, without permission, including maps, floor plans, and anything else that is not in the public domain.
  • Do not upload a picture taken by anyone else without their permission.
  • Do not upload pictures of other people without their permission (with the exception of pictures of historical figures, such as Thorstein Veblen, that you have permission to use or that are in the public domain).
  • Always indicate who owns the copyright to a picture, or any other file you upload. If it's in the public domain, say so, and indicate the original source.
  • Do not copy large amounts of text from any source, including the Carleton website. If copying a small amount of text, cite the source. In other words, don't plagiarize.

If you have any questions as to what's permissible or not, ask them in the copyright discussion page, or e-mail the webmaster.

The Carletonian

During the 2004-2005 school year, the archives of The Carletonian were made available online for browsing. [1] This archive is a priceless resource for research on the college's history. Unfortunately, it does not allow direct linking of articles. For this reason, it may be advantageous to copy pieces that are cited in CarlWiki articles, so that they can be read in their original form.

As of Fall Term 2006, the staff of The Carletonian has granted CarlWiki permission to reprint any article from the archive on CarlWiki, although they reserve the right to request that an article be removed. (Such a request from either the editorial staff or any of the article's original credited authors would be considered sufficient reason to remove an article.) This means that high-resolution images of articles can be uploaded to CarlWiki. These should be placed in Category:Carletonian article scans for tracking purposes. Keep in mind that this does not mean that The Carletonian has forfeited its copyright to these articles. However:

  • All issues of The Carletonian published prior to March 1, 1989 without a copyright notice anywhere in the issue are in the public domain. Copyright notices usually occur in one of the later pages and include the © symbol.
  • All issues of The Carletonian published prior to January 1, 1964 are in the public domain, regardless of whether they contain a copyright notice.

Those issues may be copied freely onto any website. On CarlWiki, images that use parts of these issues should include the code {{public domain}}. Example: Image:Watson Girls Survive Move (Carletonian).jpg, a full-resolution image of an article from 1967, from an issue with no copyright notice. This article is cited on the Watson Hall page.

Images that use excerpts from any other issues (those that are still copyrighted) should contain the tag {{Carletonian}}, which will explain the copyright status of the image.

If possible, the article text should be included below the image. (The text can be copied and pasted from the original PDF in the online archive.) This allows for better searches and enhanced readability.
