This is the most comprehensive source for official CarlWiki policy. Please be aware of relevant policies before making contributions. The most important thing is to use common sense when doing anything that might raise copyright or privacy concerns.

To propose a new policy, create a new page in the CarlWiki namepsace and add it to Category:Proposed CarlWiki policy, or contact an admin.

Copyright

Main article: CarlWiki:Copyright policy

By uploading material to CarlWiki, you assert one of two things:

  1. If you own the copyright to the material (whether text, an image, or anything else), then you give permission for others to use and modify that material anywhere on CarlWiki.
  2. If you don't own the copyright, then you either have permission or you believe that it falls under Fair use. In either case, you must clearly state who owns the copyright and why you believe that it is acceptable to post it.

Because CarlWiki is student-run, it does not currently have permission to use material copyrighted by Carleton College. That means that if you want to use, for instance, an image from Carleton's website, then you will have to get permission from the college.

Pieces from The Carletonian are a special case. See the copyright policy article for details.

Privacy

Main article: CarlWiki:Privacy policy

As a rule, do not post any information on a person that is not already publicly available on the internet, unless given permission by that person. Do not start pages about students. Only link to their user pages. Posting factual information about staff and faculty is fine, but do not post opinions. Pages should not be started about non-notable alumni.

Remember that CarlWiki pages can come up in broad web searches. People might object to the first hit for their name being the article on graffiti, so for that kind of article, it's best to change the names.

Bias

CarlWiki pages should be reasonably encyclopedic and objective. "When in doubt, imitate Wikipedia." Negative bias is of particular concern. CarlWiki is not the place to berate professors, insult students, or protest college policies. Such activities may cause your account to be banned.

User names

Main article: CarlWiki:User names

Offensive user names are not allowed and will be banned without warning. The same goes for user names that are used to impersonate someone else. All other user names are acceptable.

It is recommended that students and alumni use user names in the format First Last 'XX, where XX is their two-digit class year. Staff and faculty should use the format First Last unless they are also alumni. This format is also recommended for prospies and others who have an interest in the college.

It is also recommended that all users start their own user page describing themselves. To do so, click on your user name in the upper-right corner of the screen.
