Links
Every page on CarlWiki has links to other pages. For example, this one goes to the Main Page. Links to pages that exist, like that one, are blue (or purple if you've been to that page recently). Links to pages that don't exist, like this, are colored red.
If you click on a red link, you'll be given the option of creating a new page to fill in the gap. For more information on creating pages, see the editing tutorial.
The Go box
On the left-hand side is a single text box that serves two purposes: It can go directly to a page if you enter that page's name and click Go, or it can search CarlWiki for the text you enter if you click Search, or if you try to Go to a page that doesn't exist.
There are a few special pages that you can get to through the Go box, too. You can go to the pages of other users by typing User:Their Name. You can go straight to a page's discussion page by typing Talk:Page name. Some pages exist in a special "namespace" so that they won't be confused with normal pages. For example, pages that are about CarlWiki, like this tutorial, are in the "CarlWiki" namespace. To go to this tutorial, for instance, you would type CarlWiki:Reading tutorial. Categories exist in the "Category" namespace. To go to the "Classes" category, which lists all class pages on CarlWiki, type Category:Classes. There are other namespaces as well, but they're irrelevant to most people.
Creating an account
If you visit CarlWiki regularly, you'll want to start a free account. It lets you create a personal page, have discussions with other CarlWiki users, and keep track of your contributions. It's conventional on CarlWiki to use your first and last name (and middle initial, if your name is common) as your user name. For example: Pedro Uncommonname or [[User:John H. Smith]|]. Note that you have to provide the capitalization yourself; only the first letter is automatically capitalized. Also, providing your e-mail address is optional, but highly recommended, since it can be used to remind you of your password if you forget it. Your e-mail address will not be provided to anyone, and you won't be signed up for any newsletters.
Once you're logged in, you can also customize the appearance of CarlWiki by clicking the Preferences link in the upper-right corner of the screen. Feel free to play around with those settings; they don't affect anyone else. You might want to check the "Disable e-mail from other users" option, if you don't like getting e-mail. Although your e-mail address is private, people who visit your user page can send e-mails to that address through CarlWiki. This is a way for CarlWiki users to contact each other. Another way is for them to leave a message on your talk page. You can get to your own talk page by clicking the my talk button in the upper-right corner, and you can get to the talk pages of others by going to their user page and then clicking the discussion tab at the top of the page.
Conclusion
You've now mastered the art of navigating CarlWiki! From here, you might want to go on to the talking tutorial.
