Class of 1881
From CarlWiki
The Class of 1881 entered Carleton in 1877 and graduated in 1881. They are best-known for their stone, which has become a campus landmark.
Class stone
The Class of 1881 stone is located on the edge of the Bald Spot near the Libe. It simply has the number 1881 engraved in it, with a plaque giving further explanation.
The stone has attained somewhat mythical status, earning the nickname "The Boulder." Much was written on it in the February 8, 1906 issue of The Carletonian. According to a "Raiders of the Lost Archives" segment in the April 17, 1987 issue, written by then-archivist Mark A. Greene, it is a Carleton tradition to retell the story of "the boulder" every 20 years or so.
