A Dictionary

Dictionary, while relatively new, is fast on its way to becoming one of many storied Carleton traditions. It was invented by students in Fall Term, 2007.

The Rules

The game is quite simple, and requires three or more players, alcohol, and a dictionary. Each player takes turns fulfilling three roles: the Knight, the LexiMaster, and the Rube. One player, the "Knight," challenges another to define any word, usually obscure. Each player must be challenged once before the next round begins - that is, one player may not be challenged again until the rest of the group has been. If the challenged player ("Rube") cannot accurately define the word, meeting one or more definition, he or she must take a drink. If the Rube believes that the word is not acutally an English word, he or she may "call Bullshit," which requires the Knight to prove, through the use of the dictionary, that his or her word indeed exists. If it does not, the Knight must take a drink. If the Rube attempts to define a word that does not exist, he or she must take a drink. However, if the word does exist, and the Rube fails to accurately define it after calling Bullshit, then he or she must take two drinks. The responsibility for mediating, checking words' existance and checking their definitions falls to the LexiMaster, who holds the dictionary. The LexiMaster must be truthful - if not, he or she takes a drink.

The Origins

Dictionary found its origins during 1a, October 1st, 2007, in History class. The professor of said class, hereby referred to as "Professor" was, as usual, disillusioned with his students. The Professor, who was reciting aloud from the class reading, challenged the class to define the word "immutable." Only half the class raised their hands. "What," said the Professor, "you mean to say that you read this and didn't look up the word?"

"How many of you were out partying this weekend?" He asked the students. The class uniformly raised their hands. "And how many were drinkin' liquor?" Nobody raised their hand, although secretly they all knew that they had. "Well next time ya'll out drinkin', you better bring yo' dictionaries!" He commanded his class, in a thunderous voice.

Thus Dictionary was born.

Strategies

Many times, the Knight, LexiMaster, or both, will attempt to bluff the Rube into defining a word that does not exist, but the Rube must be careful in calling Bullshit, because of the added risk.

More strategies will be added as the game progresses.
