Cinematography

Part of the appeal of "Friday Flowers" came from its semi-professional looks. Unlike most DVD Fest films, "Friday Flowers" is entirely in widescreen, the images are bright and clear, and the camera cuts between people during dialogue. The film opens with a beautiful credit montage done using alternating fast-motion and normal-speed filming, as the credits arrive in various mailboxes. It also makes use two songs by Belle & Sebastian, a group with many fans at Carleton.

Summary

The film begins with an opening credits montage to the tune of Belle & Sebastian's "If She Wants Me," followed by Frankie (Greg Poduska '05) coming back from Winter Break and greeting his roommate Sebastian (Ahmad Yilmaz '05). Frankie shows Sebastian a picture frame that he received for Christmas, featuring a picture of him labeled "BF" and a blank frame labeled "GF." Frankie admonishes that he thinks his grandmother is trying to tell him something. He then reveals his secret plan to get a girlfriend before Valentine's Day using Friday Flowers: "There are seven Fridays until Valentine's Day, so that means I've got seven chances with seven different girls." Sebastian agrees to help.

Another montage, to the tune of Belle & Sebastian's "I'm a Cuckoo," then ensues, in which five different girls (and one guy) turn down Frankie in embarrassing ways. Frustrated, Frankie and Sebastian come up with the idea of using Facebook to find Frankie a girl instead. He finds an excellent match (played by Jessica Goad '07), but she turns out to be allergic to flowers, abruptly ending their courtship.

In the end, Frankie is surprised to find flowers in his mailbox instead, with a card that says: "A Real Friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out. -Sebastian." Frankie, realizing the importance of their friendship, puts Sebastian's picture on the blank side of the frame, crosses out "GF," and replaces "BF" with "BFF" (presumably meaning Best Friends Forever).
