Frisbee
From CarlWiki
At Carleton, one often sees students (and sometimes faculty/staff) throwing frisbees around on the Bald Spot or outside the LDC. Students also participate in Intramural (IM) frisbee, which is played on the Duerr fields. Some notable IM teams of past and present include: Grimace, GSL, SMUT, Professor BOOTY, Moose, Loki, Troop 509, and Oompa Loompas.
Often dorm floors or departments will form a team at the "softcore" level, while more experienced groups form teams at the "midcore" level. The two levels exist to allow new players a place to learn the basics, while allowing more veteran players a chance to hone their skills.
The introduction of IM frisbee to Carleton is usually attributed to Dan McCreary '82.
The early 90s marked a surge in the sport's popularity with well over 70% of students playing some level of organized Ultimate. The rise of Carleton's intercollegiate Ultimate teams' at the national level relied heavily on this on campus "farm system" of prospective Ultimate players. A third level of intramural teams, "hardcore", played in the Fall; allowing elite players from CUT, Syzygy, and upper-midcore teams to further hone their skills. Notable amongst these teams was Team Moon. Team Moon's core was a group of 1st years recruited by Greg Lewin and the late Al Duerr. Air Fred was assembled a year later, competing with Team Moon for campus bragging rights. Together, players from these teams created the foundation of CUT and Syzygy's success for the next few years.
Ultimate Frisbee, often called simply Ultimate or "'bee," is popular sport at Carleton, though it's not as popular in the past couple years.
Ultimate is a club sport with both men's and women's teams participating in local and national tournaments. Carleton's premier ultimate teams are the men's team, CUT (Carleton Ultimate Team) and the women's team, Syzygy. Both teams consistently go to the College Nationals Tournament and have won it. (CUT has been to Nationals every year since 1990 and was national champion in 2001. Syzygy first went to Nationals in 1988 and was National Champion in 2000.) Both CUT and Syzygy support "B" teams: CUT B and Eclipse. Carleton also has two other men's teams: GOP (Gods of Plastic) and, depending on interest, the Hot Karls.
