Goat Trophy (basketball)
From CarlWiki
The Goat Trophy is a wooden goat which has gone to the winner of the Carleton-St. Olaf basketball series every year since 1914. The tradition began on February 17, 1913, when St. Olaf fans came to the second match of the season at Sayles-Hill Gymnasium with a wooden animal labeled "Carleton's Goat," evidently in an attempt to "get Carleton's goat." However, it was the Carls who prevailed, and their fans kept the goat as a trophy. It was suggested that the goat go be turned into a symbol of the rivalry, much like that of the "Little Brown Jug" of the University of Minnesota-University of Michigan rivalry. Rules were suggested, and are still followed today[1]:
- The trophy may be gained by the other school by a sweep of the season series.
- When the series is split the team with current custody retains it.
As of the end of the 2007-2008 series Carleton has an advantage of 110-81 in the all-time series between the two schools, dating back to 1910. Carleton has also maintained possession of the trophy the trophy 18 out of the last 19 seasons.
