Minnesota State Highway 19 is an east-west highway that crosses Minnesota from the South Dakota border near the city of Ivanhoe to US 61 near the Wisconsin border. It passes through the cities of Marshall, Redwood Falls, New Prague and Northfield, and ends near Red Wing.

The seven mile stretch from exit 69 of Interstate 35 to Northfield is the most common road route to Carleton and Northfield. As it enters the city, it winds south of the other college, passes the Malt-O-Meal plant, until it reaches Highway 3. It then briefly turns north, multiplexing with Highway 3, before turning east again and crossing the Cannon River. It then turns north again, skirting the Carleton campus near the townhouses and Musser Hill, and separating Prentice House, Allen House, Wilson House, Laird Stadium and the West Gym from the rest of campus. It also divides the Upper and Lower Arbs from each other, as it curves back eastward and away from Northfield.

The access road to Goodhue Hall is via Highway 19. All other residence halls can be reached via Northfield city streets.
