History of Carleton College
From CarlWiki
The history of Carleton College dates back to its founding as "Northfield College" by the Minnesota Conference of Congregational Churches on November 14, 1866. It was then, and has always been, a co-educational institution. The first president of the college, James W. Strong, took office in 1870. The name was changed to Carleton College in the fall of 1871 in honor of William Carleton, who made an unconditional gift of $50,000 to the college. At the time, this was the largest single contribution ever made to a western college.
