Newtonian Mechanics (PHYS 113) is the first course taken by many aspiring Physics majors starting the Introduction to Physics sequence during Fall Term and Winter Term. During Winter Term, another course, PHYS 114: Gravity and the Cosmos is offered as well, and is considered to be equivalent for all requirements. Both take place during the first 5 weeks of the term. Either course serves as the sole prerequisite for Relativity and Particles (PHYS 115), which takes place during the second 5 weeks of the term. Physics 113 and 115 are normally taken in the same term, though this is not required.

The course contains a scheduled lab component, which students are required to attend once a week for 4 hours.

Although many students who take Physics 113 are not Physics majors, all Physics majors must take either Physics 113 or Physics 114 (or, in a few cases, the AP Physics exam).
