Lagniappe
From CarlWiki
The article below describes a tradition kept under some degree of secrecy. Prospective and first-year students who wish to avoid "spoilers" should avoid reading it.
The Lagniappe is an academic planner given out at the beginning of each academic year to all Carleton students, usually on the day before classes start. Its name comes from a Creole term meaning "unexpected gift." [1] Fittingly, its existence is not announced to students until it is available. It includes a calendar with important dates and academic deadlines, a campus map, and other useful information specific to Carleton. First-year students often consult the class schedule information in the back. Amusing information and little-known traditions, such as International Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th), are sprinkled throughout. Despite its relatively bulky size, it is the most popular planner used by Carleton students.
The first Lagniappe was produced for the 1992-1993 academic year, and one has followed every year since. Each one has included a lobster on its cover.
The Lagniappe is produced by Campus Activities and written during the summer by the New Student Week Coordinators. [2]
