Mac Welles '67

Mac Welles, Class of 1967, is a native of Duluth, Minnesota, famous for great adventures above and below the surface of the Carleton campus.

He was long-term friend of Schiller and hosted Schiller at his lakeside home in Duluth during the summer of 1965. It was during that summer that Schiller made a near-miraculous recovery from the shattering experience of falling off a galloping horse in front of a huge crowd at Laird Stadium during the 1964 homecoming football game.

During the 1965-66 academic year, Welles was often seen in the company of the fabled poet's bust.

In 2004, "Mac Welles was named executive director of the 400-mile Duluth-Gunflint Trail Center-Duluth John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. He’s former race director of the NorthShore Inline Marathon, and a member of Grandma’s Marathon Hall of Fame."
