Mai Fete or May Fete was once Carleton's annual spring festival. The event was staged on Mai Fete Island in the lower Lyman Lake, with spectators viewing from the bordering hillside. In its heydey, it included plays, Maypole dances, marches, art expositions, and a beauty contest. Quite popular in the '20s and '30s, the event lost steam through the '50s and was eventually abandoned in the 1960s, seen as "something of an anachronism". It was eventually replaced with a more modern weekend arts festival and later a student musical concert. Those concerts evenutally became Spring Concert.

The first floor of the Gould Library has a May Fete poster by Alfred J. Hyslop.

Senior Mai Fete

It has been traditional for the senior class to hold their own Mai Fetes on Mai Fete Island during spring term, with alcohol consumption serving as the main event. During the 2005-2006 school year this attracted the attention of security, as the parties were disturbing the Goodhue residents during quiet hours. During the 2006-2007 year the organizers decided to voluntarily card people on the bridge to the island to prevent underage drinking, and close down the party at 11PM.
