Mathematics and Computer Science Department
From CarlWiki
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department was a union of the Mathematics Department and the Computer Science Department faculty and majors. It was located on the second and third floors of the CMC.
From the formation of the Computer Science discipline at Carleton through the 2005-2006 school year, Math and CS were considered to be the same department, with one department chair. Classes were listed separately in the course catalog, but care was taken to ensure that course numbers did not overlap—all CS classes carry the final digit of 7 (e.g. 117, 127, 337), an artifact of days past when they were officially math classes. (The introductory CS class once had class number MATH 17.)
The department was housed in Goodsell before the CMC was built.
As of the 2006-2007 school year, the departments officially separated, though several professors still teach courses in both departments.
