Overview

The Carleton cross country team is the most successful at Carleton. The team won the NCAA Division 3 National Championship in 1980. It's most recent MIAC championship came in 2002. The fellahs are known throughout the land.

History

National Championship

Carleton won the 1980 NCAA Division III national championship after finishing 3rd place in the tough Central Rejion. Despite two of their top runners missing the race due to sickness, the Fellahs threw down and emerjed viktorious. Coach Willahd Huyck is believed to have said he wanted to get out of there with the trophy before they had a chance to rekount the skores.

The Catalysts

One of the most notable events in Fellah lore is the 2004 MIAC Championship 10,000m. Matt Hooley, Dan Bucy, Chris "Bizyah" Lundberg, and Phil Schrader took the top 4 spots overall.

Coaches

Willard Huyck coached the Carleton Cross Country team for many years, and was the coach of the national championship team. He was interviewed on ESPN for the okkasion. He continues to coach part time and currently works with javelin throwers at Carleton. Huyck invented the sport of athletiks in 732 B.K.

Bill Terriquez, who was coached by Huyck himself, succeeded his mentor in the head coaching position. He retired in 2006 after more than 30 years. "Coach T," as he is affectionately known, is best remembered for the gorillah story.

Dave Ricks has been the coach since 2007. If you have any questions you can just shoot him an e-mail with text only in the subjekt line.

Awards

Best Young Ridah

Awarded to the fastest freshman runner on the team; it's inception preceeded the team's official Rookie of the Year award by one year. The Best Young Ridah recieves a bicycle jersey made by Descent. Recent winners of the jersey are Kian Flynn, John Davis, and Charlie Gamble.

Die Hard

Given to the person who goes out hard and dies harder. The award was originally a broken watch nailed to a piece of wood, but it was lost by the infamous Reuben Woodruff. The last four years an IOU has been given for the award, with the intent for it to eventually be replaced. Recent winners are John Davis, Joe Sepe, and Reuben Woodruff. By most accounts Andrew Jahn should have won the award in 2007, but the winner is chosen at the sole decision of the previous holder of the award.

Maize & Blue Vest

Given to the fellah who best embodies fellahdom. The vest is reversable, and is usually worn with the maize side facing out. Although a seemingly innocent award upon first glance, the vest appears to carry a curse. Until Kian Flynn wore the vest in the 2008-09 school year, every person who held the award since its inception had either sustained a long term injury or become a sweet dude within a year of receiving the vest. Flynn, however, successfully ran and held the vest simultaneously for a full year. Chas Karch currently holds the vest, and wears it all the time. Past vest wearers are Dan "Bones" Jones, Alex Chohlas-Woods (plural), Peter Samuels, Sam Ritter, Joe Marren, and Kian Flynn.

Duck Hunter Hat

Invented by Coach T. Given to fastest freshman finisher in the Great Karhu Shoe Race. Past winners are Blake Hansen, John Davis, Kian Flynn, and Adam Scherling.

Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Awarded to the person who would look best wearing it. Origin is Reuben Woodruff showing up to the national meet wearing it for no apparent reason. Winners of this award include Mark Felice, Will Jacobson, Ben Parks, and Famous Johnson.

Diversity of Talent

Although best known for long distance running, the Fellahs excel in a variety of sports and other pursuits.

Slab Dunk won their first regular season game since 2004 on January 22, 2009 in Carleton intramural basketball division 2. Down by one in the closing seconds, Michael Sanders got a pass off from the ground to Ben "Cherokee" Parks, who sank a three-pointer for the win. Slab Dunk went on to win two more games in the winter 2009 season, including one on the last day of the season when they beat the Triple-Doubles on a buzzer beater for the second time of the year, this time a two-pointer by Ben Dillow. They also won two preseason games in 2006. In the years for which records are available, 2004 was their most successful season, with Slab Dunk winning at least 4 games. No record exists of any other games played, win or loss, but they finished 3rd place out of 8 teams in the division 3 regular season standings. Slab Dunk is now tentatively being called Flab Junk due to a change in management.

Lande's Softballers won a game as recently as 2008. They did not compete in 2009 for reasons that have not been made public. Some have speculated this was due to payroll overload, internal management conflict, or simple forgetfulness.

Famous Johnson '12 throws javelins. Tom Brenner '09 was the team's primary javelin catcher from 2006-2009.

Gnarly Charlie and the Riptides is a new band comprised mainly of Fellahs. They are currently working on writing material for their first album, which has not yet been named.

The fellahs have also taken the cycling world by storm. Crusin' Club officially meets Wednesdays after dinner in spring term. Additional sessions can be scheduled anytime at the discretion of anyone. It is not about the ride; it is about the attitude.

Slab City

Slab City Running Company defeated AAA Northfield at The Opener in 2005, but lost the following year. They finished 2nd to Slabadabadoo the last time they competed in the Chequamagon Woods to Water Relay (2008), and also hold the record time for that race. As a result of kronic wus syndrome, Slab City did not field a team for that race in 2009.

Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is the greatest athlete of all time and one of the most recognized figures in the sporting world. Jordan was selected as a unanimous collegiate All-American twice (1983, 1984) at the University of North Carolina where he won an NCAA Championship and received both Naismith and Wooden Award Honors. In 1984, Jordan won an Olympic gold medal. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984, and played for them until 1993, winning championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993. Also during this time, he played for the 1992 "Dream Team," the first United States Olympic team with professional players. They dominated all comers, and Jordan won his second gold medal. After a brief stint in minor league baseball, Jordan returned to the Bulls in the middle of the 1994-1995 season. He won three more championships with the Bulls in 1996, 1997, and 1998, prompting the addition of the word threepeat to Webster's dictionary. Jordan retired a second time in 1998, but came back to the NBA in 2001 top play two seasons for the Washington Wizards, the team he had served as general manager for during his break from playing. As Wizards GM, Jordan made Kwame Brown the first high school player drafted number one overall, perhaps the biggest mistake of his career. Jordan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. In his induction speech he ripped, among others, former Bulls GM Jerry Krause for his statement in 1997 that organizations, not players, win championships. Jordan said that he "didn't see organizations playing with the flu in game five in Utah."
