Carleton began construction of two residence halls on First Street, south of the Language and Dining Center in May 2008. Completion is scheduled for the beginning of August 2009.

The buildings were designed by the architecture firm LHB. The college is seeking Gold Level certification as a Green Building for the project.

On October 25, a ceremonial brick laying was accompanied by the announcement that one of the buildings will be known as Cassat Hall, in honor of gifts from George L. Cassat '46 and his late wife Patricia D. Cassat '46.

The other building will be named Memorial Hall in honor Carleton men and women who have perished while in military service to the United States.

The new buildings will offer living spaces for about 230 students. One of the buildings will consist of suites and the other of more traditional dormitory rooms. The additional residence units will relieve crowding in existing buildings and reduce the number of students living off-campus.

Illustrations of the designs, construction progress, and project schedules are available at the New Residence Halls web page.

Three web cams (one from Myers Hall, one from the Music and Drama Center, and one at the Language and Dining Center) are available so observers can monitor construction progress.
