Northfield Option

Northfield Option is the general term describing any student housing not owned by Carleton College. This usually involves students renting houses or apartments in Northfield or other surrounding communities, but can be extended to situations such as students working as live-in caretakers or townie students living at home.

Any student desiring Northfield Option for the next year must apply for it through Res Life prior to Room Draw. The number of Northfield Option slots is limited, but it does fluctuate depending on the number of incoming Freshmen.

Northfield Option students are not assigned room draw numbers and are kept out of the room draw process. This works to prevent students from hedging their bets and only taking Northfield Option in response to poor dorm placement.

All Northfield Option students are off board, but may purchase meal plans as desired.

Notable Northfield Option Houses

Some Northfield residences have been used as student housing for Northfield Option students for so long, they've developed names, and sometimes irreverant personalities, similar to college-owned off-campus houses.
