Study abroad is a term used synonymously with "off-campus study" at Carleton. It is commonly used to avoid confusion with the office of Off-Campus Studies (OCS), which is the primary office for offering and administrating these programs.

According to the college's statistics, two-thirds of Carleton students "traditionally" study abroad for at least one academic term. Of these, 55% study in off-campus seminars, comprised of both Carleton students and Carleton faculty. [1]
