Peter Tork '64

Peter H. Thorkelson '64 (son of the late John Thorkelson '38), enrolled at Carleton in 1959. After dropping out in 1960, he returned in 1961-62 as a sophomore. After the fall term of 1962, he left Carleton again. His primary interests were in becoming a better muscian and performing.
He and friends often performed slapstick, comedic improvisations in Willis Lounge for whomever was present. Thorkelson's most prominent activities at Carleton involved theater, with the Carleton Players. He appeared in the cast of Ulysses in Nighttown, The Plough in the Stars, The Apollo of Belloc, The Underground Man, Hamlet (as both Bernardo and the Player King), and was a musician for Mandragola and assistant director for Under Milk Wood. He also played in the orchestra his freshman year.
He went to New York after leaving Carleton and was performing in coffee houses when he auditioned for a new television series in 1965. As Peter Tork, he was chosen for the cast of The Monkees.
Various tributes have been paid to this famous alumnus including the naming of a video game room on the second floor of Sayles-Hill as The Peter Tork Game Room and the founding of a the Peter Tork Streetball Kings in 2000.
