Physics major

The physics major at Carleton is generally considered to be the most rigorous science major, with a relatively large number of fixed requirements, as well as greater math prerequisites.

The major
Note that several of the courses given below are pairings of two 3-credit 5-week classes. These are listed with the word "and" connecting them. All others are 6-credit 10-week classes, unless noted otherwise.
Core sequence
The following courses are required for the physics major:
- Introduction to Physics: PHYS 113: Newtonian Mechanics or PHYS 114: Gravity and the Cosmos, and PHYS 115: Relativity and Particles
- PHYS 128: Atomic and Nuclear Physics
- PHYS 229: Classical Mechanics and Physics 230: Computational Mechanics
- PHYS 235: Electricity and Magnetism
- PHYS 336: Quantum Mechanics I (3-credits)
- PHYS 338: Thermal Physics (3-credits)
- PHYS 342: Contemporary Experimental Physics
Other requirements
The following math courses are also required:
Additionally, physics majors must take at least one applied physics course.
Comps
Physics comps features a talk and paper on a topic chosen by the student.
