Prerequisite

A prerequisite, or "prereq" for short, is a requirement, usually a course, that one must have before taking another class. For example, MATH 111: Calculus I is a prerequisite for MATH 121: Calculus II.

Alternative prerequisites

Sometimes, multiple classes or AP exams meet the prereqs to another class. For example, either MATH 236: Math Structures or CS 177: Algorithms I meet one of the prerequisites for CS 227: Algorithms II. (It also requires MATH 121: Calculus II and CS 127: Data Structures.) This is because MATH 236 and CS 177 overlap significantly in their material. However, upper-level Math courses require MATH 236, and do not accept CS 177 as an alternative prerequisite.

Other times, courses are completely equivalent for the purpose of requirements, as in the case of PHYS 113: Newtonian Mechanics and PHYS 114: Gravity and the Cosmos.

Waiving prerequisites

Exceptions to prereqs are commonly made by Carleton faculty, as students may be qualified for a subject without having taken a particular class, or the prerequisite may be otherwise unnecessary. There is no process at Carleton for registering a class without having taken met its prerequisites; instead, such registration is allowed, but professors may reject such students. Therefore, as a matter of protocol, students generally ask professors for permission before registering for classes that they have not met the prerequisites for.
