Shelby Boardman
From CarlWiki
Shelby Boardman was a geology professor and Dean of the College.
Shelby received his B.A. from Miami University in 1966, and his M.S. (economic geology, 1969) and Ph.D. (petrology, 1971) from The University of Michigan. He came to Carleton directly after graduating from Michigan. He was named an Associate Dean of the College in 1994, served as Acting Dean of the College in 1997, and was Dean of the College from 2002 to 2005.
After a yearlong sabbatical in 2005–06, during which he took some alumni on a tour to Antarctica, Shelby returned to teaching geology in the fall term of the 2006-2007 academic year. He taught an invigorating freshman seminar on "Geology in the Field," consisting mostly of field trips, to some members of the Class of 2010.
His sudden death during the school year came as a shock to many at Carleton. Two services were held at First United Church of Christ and Skinner Memorial Chapel, attended by relatives, fellow faculty and staff, advisees, students, and friends in Northfield.
