GDST

Some more concrete info on this GDST thing would be nice. Was it a joke or not?

Perhaps GDST should have its own article? It doesn't relate to Goodhue as a dorm. Sarah Vigeland '06 16:38, 9 May 2006 (PDT)

Sarah, Great idea. Thanks.

Women's hours?

The article makes reference to "women's hours." What were those? An article on them would be great. --Trevor Burnham '07 09:39, 17 March 2006 (PST)

Back in ancient times, women were confined to their dormitories (and those other women's dorms connected by tunnels) from about 10:30PM until about 6:00AM weekdays and from about midnight to 6:00AM on weekend nights. Front doors of women's dorms were locked when women were to be inside.

Late returning women had to request entrance at Gridley and their tardiness was noted and reports submitted to the Dean of Women (then the women would walk to their dorms through the tunnels). Women would lose points for tardiness and other infractions. If a woman "earned" too many points, she could be suspended (off campus) for 10 days.

Women who left campus had to sign out with their dorm mothers and sign in when they returned.

Bell girls manned the front desks in women's dorms, greeted male guests, and telephoned the floor where the guest's friend lived so she could come down to meet her guest. Remnants of those bell desks and the phone system can be found is some of the east side dorms.

Since Gridley was the late night entrance to women's dorms, the lawn, bushes, trees, and stairs near Gridley's entrance were the scenes of passionate "good nights" in the minutes before women had to be inside. The dorm mother would blink the porch lights as a signal to women to get inside.

You need to find a woman who graduated before '70 to write an article. (The classes of '66, '61, '56, '51, etc will be on campus for reunion in June.)
