The Carleton Observer, commonly referred to as simply the Observer, is a student publication run by the Carleton Conservative Union, intended to enhance political debate on campus by allowing all viewpoints to be represented. It accepts writings on any subject and from any perspective. It is often controversial (to some extent intentionally) for its editors' musings on delicate subjects at Carleton, most notably multiculturalism. Responses to pieces published in the Observer can frequently be found in the following issue of The Carletonian.

The Progressive is a newer publication of similar scope. Done in the same style as the Observer, it prints only liberal editorials.

Trivia

  • The quote by Seneca the Younger, "Truth is the most sacred virtue of the human heart," frequently appears in the Observer.
  • During Spring Term 2005, the Observer published a breakdown of the CSA budget in response to the Senate's refusal to post that information publicly.
