From CarlWiki
"The Dead Menace" was an entry in DVD Fest 2005 directed by Rachel Teagle '08 and Ben Egerman '08. Although the film received no awards, it was considered very funny and has a highly dedicated cult following. The film was made by members of 1-3rd Goodhue. This same team went on to make the winning 2006 film Short Attention Span Theater.Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.
Summary
The film is made in the style of a 1950s educational video or public service announcement, and its title makes obvious reference to the cold-war era belief in the the 'Red Menace.' It relies heavily on physical comedy, such as a zombie attempting to attack two people in a car with little success until he realizes to just open the door, or a prolonged neck snapping scene, whose realistic sound effects caused most of the audience to cringe, in which the actor explaining how to kill zombies accidentally kills an intern bringing him coffee.
Trivia
- The music at the beginning and the end of the film is from an actual 1950s instructional video, entitled, "How To Be Popular"
- In the first and last scenes, the car features a hand-printed bumper sticker reading "I Like Ike"
- The sound effect of zombies' necks snapping are, in fact, cast member Russell O'Connell '08, cracking his knuckles into a microphone, but it convinced an audience of about 750 otherwise. Ironically (not actually ironic), Russell is the first zombie to have his neck snapped.
- The scene referring to "multiple zombies" was actually a dance known as the zombie dance, and was filmed at a Folk Dancing class.
- The scene featuring Sari Cornfeld '08, who is instructed to fight zombies with a spatula and oven mitt while wearing a bikini, was written by Rachel Teagle '08, and NOT Ben Egerman, '08. Contrary to popular belief, Ben is interested in neither sexism nor women. At all.
