The Lens' first issue cover

The Lens is a magazine begun during Fall Term 2005 that publishes serious papers written by Carleton students. It has a wide (on-campus and national) distribution, of which a part is funded by the CSA.

There have been controversies over funding, most notably in the fall of 2005 when the magazine was initially allocated upwards of $20,000 by the CSA. Part of the size of the allocation was attributed to start-up costs, but after strong objections by many students, the sum was reduced by several thousand dollars. Opponents of The Lens have said that the amount of money requested from CSA is disproportionate based on their number of contributors and readers. Defenders claim that the funding is necessary to establish the magazine's national reputation, and that they face undue hostility for attempting to expand their reach beyond campus borders.

In October 2009, The Lens received the Gold Medalist ranking from Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), garnering 995/1000 points in the evaluation. The magazine also has received a First Class from the Associated Collegiate Press, Silver Crown Award from the CSPA, and Second Place Newspaper of the Year Award presented by the National College Newspaper Convention.
