In 2001, Carleton opened nine townhouses containing 23 apartments as new student housing. Each apartment accommodated 3 to 6 people and offered cable television, access to the ResNet, a washer and dryer, storage areas, kitchen appliances and furniture for the living room, dining room and bedrooms. Stretching from Musser Hall down to Division Street, they are considered to be off-campus houses.

The townhouses were designed by Elness Swenson Graham Architects of Minneapolis and span two acres on the West Side edge of the campus. The design was intended to complement the appearance of Northfield's main street.
