The academic year, also known as the school year, is the span of time during which either classes are in session or finals are being held. There are three terms, Fall, Winter, and Spring, each of which lasts approximately ten weeks. The day on which classes begin is always a Monday, and campus housing opens on the Saturday before it. Classes end on Wednesday nine weeks later, finals are held from Saturday through Monday, and campus housing closes on the Tursday after.

Times during each academic term are often referred to by week, with the official weeks starting on Monday. This makes the last day of finals the only day of "eleventh week," although by this time many students have already completed finals and left campus.

For freshmen, New Student Week is also considered to be a part of the academic year. It begins on the Wednesday before classes begin. It can be considered as a sort of "zeroth week."

The Monday of sixth week each term is a respite from classes, and this three-day weekend is referred to as Midterm Break. The only other break from classes during the academic terms at Carleton is the Reading Day period that consists of the Thursday and Friday before finals, and is intended as a period of study.

Fall Term 2005

Housing closed on Thursday, March 16th, 2006.

The two-week period between Winter Term and Spring Term is referred to as Spring Break.

Spring Term 2006

Housing opened on Saturday, March 25th, 2006.
Classes began on Monday, March 27th, 2006.
Midterm Break goes from Saturday, April 29th through Monday, May 1st, 2006.
Classes end on Wednesday, May 31st, 2006.
Finals go from Saturday, June 3rd, 2006 through Monday, June 5th, 2006.
Housing closes on Tuesday, June 6th, 2006.

The three-month period between Spring Term and Fall Term is, of course, the Summer Vacation. Classes begin for Fall Term 2006 on Monday, September 11th, 2006.
