Ultimate is a competitive non-contact team sport played with a flying disc most commonly called a Frisbee (which is a brand name). The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc into the opposing endzone. The game was invented by students at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey in 1968. It was based on Frisbee Football played at east coast summer camps. Most early participants were top academic students and/or counter culture marijuana enthusiasts who did not participate in high school athletics. The first two teams represented the school newspaper and the student council.

Ultimate is distinguished by the Spirit of the Game. The rules of the Ultimate Players Association describes the Spirit of the Game this way: "Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the agreed upon rules of the game, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct from the ultimate field. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other "win-at-all-costs" behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players."

Carleton's Ultimate teams have been successful and very competititve on a national level for many years.
