What should be done about uploading images? I noticed that this feature was disabled, but I was thinking about uploading the floor plans and building photos from the Room Draw website.--Scott Konzem 2006 01:34, 31 Dec 2004 (PST)
- Sorry, I wasn't aware that the feature was disabled; I'll get on that. However, we can't simply upload things from the Carleton website, for copyright reasons. Maybe you could e-mail Mark Heiman about getting permission to use those materials. --Trevor Burnham 01:37, 31 Dec 2004 (PST)
I mentioned this on Facebook, but it would be a good idea to publicize this Wiki, particularly on the Cobwebs caucus.--Scott Konzem 2006 02:37, 31 Dec 2004 (PST)
- Absolutely. My intention was to only publicize it to those with prior Wiki experience before winter term, so that we could do some preliminary work, and then publicize like crazy during the term. --Trevor Burnham 12:32, 31 Dec 2004 (PST)
I'd like my username in "Scott Konzem '06" format after all. I suppose there won't be any collisions with people from the class of 1906...--Scott Konzem 2006 14:36, 31 Dec 2004 (PST)
Nice work, Trevor. And a lot of it. I'm a writer and retired teacher, so I have time. How do you have time?
Ken Wedding '67
- Well, most of what I've contributed, I did over Spring Break 2005, so I had time. These days, it helps that I work at the SCIC, where I'm required to sit in front of a computer for hourly pay but not required to actually do anything unless someone comes by to ask for help. So, just as Albert Einstein wrote his first scientific papers while working at the patent office (I love that story), I made CarlWiki while working at the SCIC. Check out Wikipedia for a much more impressive collaborative effort; CarlWiki has a long way to go. (By the way, Ken, you can sign your posts simply by putting four tildes after it, like so: ~~~~.) --Trevor Burnham '07 06:58, 31 Mar 2005 (PST)
Trevor,
re: Dead Day. I have no clue about what the college called the day without classes before exams began when I was attending 40 years ago. All I remember is that classes ended, there was Dead Day, and then two exam periods a day (3 hour periods moring and afternoon) until exams were done. The exams were scheduled by class meeting periods on a rotating or random schedule. I also recall one term when I got my exams done by noon of the second day of exams. The only time anyone was thankful for that schedule was at the end of winter term '65. A blizzard began the morning of the second day of exams. People who got out of Northfield that afternoon were successful. By the next day, all roads and the rail service to Northfield were shut down for about 48 hours. We partied a lot. Trevor,
Is there a listing of all categories and the hierarchy of categories for CarlWiki? OR is that something that gets built over time? Ken Wedding '67 07:40, 31 Mar 2005 (PST)
- You can get a list of all categories, generated in real-time, by going to Special:Categories. Unfortunately, some of these categories are contained in each other; others are obsolete, or overlap. This is something that will become cleaner and clearer over time. --Trevor Burnham '07 11:50, 31 Mar 2005 (PST)
Trevor,
I think there's a problem with a clock somewhere. I corrected a misspelling at 8:39PM and when I returned to the page, the indication was that it had been altered at 0:34 AM the next day. Ken Wedding '67 18:40, 31 Mar 2005 (PST)
- Hmm, are you in Pacific Standard Time? That's strange, I'll look into it. --Trevor Burnham '07 14:15, 1 Apr 2005 (PST)
- Trevor, old man, I'm right here in Northfield. I'm on the west side of town, but still in the Central time zone, and the clocks on my computers are all correct AFAIK. right not the computer time display is 7:17 PM Ken Wedding '67 17:12, 1 Apr 2005 (PST) BUT, when this showed up on the "Recent changes" page, it was April 2 at some time just after midnight. Ken Wedding '67 17:14, 1 Apr 2005 (PST)
- Alright, I've figured out the clock thing. Strangely, although posts are signed with the time in PST, the Recent Changes page, by default, lists times in UTC. Here's what you can do: Go to "My Preferences" (in the upper-right), down to "Time Zone," and set it to "-5:00" (without the quotes). That will set Recent Changes (and some other pages) to list times in Central Time. I'll see if I can set that as the default; part of the trouble here is that this software was designed for Wikipedia, so the server is supposed to be based on UTC. --Trevor Burnham '07 19:40, 3 Apr 2005 (PDT)
Trevor,
Good thoughts on User pages. I've changed mine. Ken Wedding '67 17:38, 3 Apr 2005 (PDT)
Trevor: I wrote a page on the bathroom graffiti, but then realized it could get out of hand, so blanked it. Feel free to delete it. I think the graffiti is funny, and it's more or less harmless, but in a public space like this it might not be a good idea. 137.22.11.177 20:50, 3 Apr 2005 (PDT)
Trevor,
I found the "Lingo" page and thought there ought to be an link there for brief page for " 'Hue " as a nickname for Goodhue (with a link to the Goodhue Hall page, of course). I'll do it if I figure out how as I learn more, but I don't know how yet. Ken Wedding '67 21:06, 3 Apr 2005 (PDT)
- Sure, the way to create a new page is to type its name in the Go box (in this case, "'Hue") and then click on "Create a page with this title" when no page comes up. Then add the text "[[Category:Lingo]]" to the bottom of the page, and that will automatically add it to the list of pages that shows up at Category:Lingo. If you want to get fancy, you could also add the indicator "{{lingo|Goodhue Hall}}" to the page, which automatically adds some text explaining that the main article on this subject is at the page Goodhue Hall. --Trevor Burnham '07 06:58, 4 Apr 2005 (PDT)

vandalism
Trevor,
someone is vandalizing pages by adding hidden links to spam sites
(Example links deleted. --Trevor)
- That's terrible. Unfortunately, the only way to address such spam is, as on Wikipedia, for all users to delete spam on sight. --Trevor Burnham '07 16:01, 9 December 2005 (PST)
- I was wrong; there are other ways. I've installed multiple extensions that have been highly effective in blocking spam. If you see any more spam that links to a certain domain name, you can add that domain name to the list at CarlWiki:Spam blacklist, then delete the spam. Any future attempts to link to that domain name will be blocked. I can also have the IP address that the spam was sent from blocked. --Trevor Burnham '07 07:39, 24 March 2006 (PST)
Thanks
Thanks for changing my name--I wasn't sure if I could have spaces initially. Anyway, I heard about CarlWiki when I prospied during the first accepted students weekend and I saw a poster. Being a huge fan of both Carleton and Wikis of all sorts, I visited as soon as I remembered about the site's existence (today). I haven't gotten my NetID yet, so I can't access Caucus yet, but I look forward to it. Grace Flinsch '10 15:13, 18 April 2006 (PDT)
- No problem. Always nice to have another wiki fan around; CarlWiki isn't quite at a critical mass yet, but I think that if Homestar Runner can have its own thriving wiki, Carleton certainly can. When you get your NetID, be sure to get an account on Facebook and join the Wikipedians group there. --Trevor Burnham '07 16:05, 18 April 2006 (PDT)
You asked
"Where is there a soccer net near a body of water?"
Bell Field? West Gym field near the river?
Now that I've actually looked at the photo, is it on the west shore of Lower Lyman looking south (across the path between Goodhue and Olin)? --Ken Wedding '67
- Thanks. Please remember to sign your posts in the future. --Trevor Burnham '07 10:16, 20 April 2006 (PDT)
Housing
Hey, Trevor! As you noted on my user page, I've been blasting through facilities the past couple of weeks. And there certainly are contradictions--Carleton.edu lists, for example, Page House as being both employee housing and student housing. I don't honestly know which is true, or if they're both true and the house is dual purpose.
What I tried to do, really, was get everything categorized properly, meaning no buildings whatsoever are listed under Category:Facilities anymore. (Right now, Nutting House is the only one, because I haven't finished Category:Faculty housing yet.) They're all in various subcategories, and some of them (like Laird Hall, for example) are listed under multiple subcategories. You can probably figure this out yourself by poking around a bit, but the scheme I eventually devised was this: Category:Facilities
- Category:Academic Buildings
- Boliou, the CMC, Goodsell, etc.
- Category:Administrative buildings
- Arb Office, Bird House, the CMC, etc.
- Category:Arts facilities
- Arena, the Concert Hall, the M&D and Nourse Little Theater
- Category:Athletic facilities
- Cowling, Gridley, Stadium, etc.
- Category:Dining facilities
- Burton Dining Hall, East Dining Hall, Goodhue Dining Hall, etc.
- Category:Facilities buildings
- Various storage facilities and Shop
- Category:Housing
- Category:Interest houses
- ASIA House, Black House, CANOE House, etc.
- Category:Off-campus houses
- Allen House, Art House, Benton House, etc, plus
- Category:Faculty housing
- Faculty Club and Page House so far (this section is not finished)
- Category:Townhouses
- Brooks House, Collier House, Colwell House, etc.
- Category:Residence halls
- Burton, Davis, Evans, etc
- Category:Interest houses
- Category:Lounges
- Great Hall and the Superlounge so far, plus
- Category:Dorm lounges
- The Superlounge (Whoops! Need to fix this one...)
- Category:Other buildings
- Alumni Guest House, Goodsell, Gould, Sayles and the Chapel.
The past week has been slow at work. That will probably change by tomorrow, and I'll not be doing QUITE so much stuff. --Chris Johnson '96 22:13, 24 July 2006 (BST)
