CarlWiki:User names
A surprisingly large number of user names are technically valid on CarlWiki. Nearly all punctuation, including commas and periods, are acceptable, as are numbers. So, Sir H. Mencken, Jr. will work as a user name. However, only a few of these possible user names are recommended for the CarlWiki environment. Unlike Wikipedia, where a certain degree of anonymity is standard, CarlWiki is a community that recommends full names.
It should go without saying that offensive user names are not allowed and will be promptly banned. The same goes for names that are used to impersonate someone else.
If you want to change your name after signing up for an account, make a request at CarlWiki:Request name change.
To create a link to a person's user page, use the format [[User:Their User Name]]. Added a pipe character (|) after their name in order to hide the User: prefix.
Students and alumni
It is recommended that you put your name into a full name and class year format. For example:
- Trevor Burnham '07 (a current student)
- Ken Wedding '67 (an alumnus)
Note that spaces do matter.
Faculty and staff
If you are an alumnus of Carleton College, use the alumni format (above). If not, just use your full name. For example:
- Ann Zawistoski '97 (a librarian and alumnus)
- Dave Musicant (a professor who is not an alumnus)
Others
If you would like a CarlWiki account, you are welcome to have one under either a pseudonym or your own name. Please do not use a class year suffix, however.
